  #200 - June 13, 2008 - Sandokan, unfurling a pirate flag!
Verdeluna. animal of the night, gets connected, and waits, gets connected, and waits, and waits... Nobody there...???
BLING!
I too am a nocturnal creature.
Did you just bump into me, or did you know where to find me?
Could be that I drink too much coffee...
But here on the beach there's someone who makes exquisite coffee...
Oh Sandokan, Sandokan, you're late as always. Do you remember how this is how we first got started?
Just like I heard you were using the same words you used that September night. It was that night we both knew we were made for each other...
Sandokan, I am looking out of the window as we chat. When will you show up on the horizon, when?
We are coming up the coast from the south, heading north. Can't you see me yet?
Verdeluna has borrowed a pair of super-strength binoculars from Olivia's husband, but no, nothing... Every minute she's waiting, she's more worried that it was after all an illusion, and that there's no gallion, no Mompracem. Last night, she lay tossing and turning in bed, going over all the tall tales she heard from her pirate and thinking they were all so outrageous they proved, they proved...
What?
An excess of phantasy.
Your non-existence, Sandokan.
And Sandokan launches into yet more explanations. About how the tortoise that stole Yanez' coffee and took it to the Oracle of the Jungle really does exist. Martinez, the circus-loving sailor and owner of Jimmy the monkey, taught a tortoise how to steal coffee from Yanez, as a practical joke. The Mompracem is Sandokan's almost-perfect floating island, his world of miracles, and it has only one defect, to which he is about to put an end: there's no Verdeluna!
Anything else you want to ask me about? Ask me now, because when I get there, I don't want to talk at all.
I just want to kiss you.
And the Pearl of Labuan?
Did she really exist? She's one of my nightmares.
She did, Verdeluna, and I suffered badly because I lost her. But I've got over it. There will be no more nightmares for us, Verdeluna.
Just one battlecry, together: ALL' ASSALTO!!!
Every door opens when you know your nature, and every paradise becomes accessible, and luminous.
Ooohh Sandokan, if you don't exist I will continue dreaming of you, and I will become a dream myself, just to be close to you. I'll be like The Matrix, creating a virtual life on my computer, and saying goodbye to my real one.
Verdeluna, it's just a matter of minutes, and you'll see me on the horizon.
Wait, do Valerio and Patrizia know I'm coming?
Of course, I had to tell them, or they'd find an unexpected Sandokan in the kitchen...
I told them that tonight a ship will arrive, a ship loaded with joy and happiness, and that on the bridge of that ship is the pirate of the Seven Seas, who is coming to see me...
Do you want me to cook you something special, Valerio responded, and hurried to the kitchen to cook the best meal in his entire career as a chef.
Six-eight-four-two, the 13th of June 2008...
I am clutching aunty Faustina's bottle, Sandokan.
Just make sure you get here before midnight!
I've given orders for the engineers to push the ship as hard as they can, and even harder.
Wait, I can see the lights of Civitavecchia!!!
Can it be you can't see me yet?
Clearly chatting is all make-belief!
I've lit up a giant green light at the top of the main mast, in your honour, Lunaverde Smeralda. Can't you see it?
NO!!!
WHERE???
......Oh god, oh god, there it is, I see a green light in the distance...
I see the Mompracem, it's beautiful, it's a dream!!!
I see a large cabin just under the light, and in the cabin, I see a man, a man at the helm...
VERDELUNA!!!!!!!!!! OHHHHHHHHHH SANDOKAN!!!!!!!!!!
I can see you, I can see you at the helm of your ship, and you're unfurling something, what are you unfurling... a pirate flag!!!
And the bottle, Aunty Faustina's bottle, is turning bright red...
Red like our passion, Verdeluna, red like our love... Now open the bottle... One, two, three... Sandokan... Sandokan...

#199 - June 12, 2008 - Don't ever doubt my true love for you!

Verdeluna is counting the hours, the minutes, the seconds even until Sandokan's arrival.
What if chatting is really just all about make-belief? What if something happened to Sandokan the night before they finally meet?
Oh Sandokan, tell me you're not a bubble that's about to burst!
Oh Verdeluna, I've told you many times.
You can doubt if the sun will rise.
You can doubt the moonshine.
But don't ever doubt my true love for you...
But there are so many little things I still don't understand. Like? Like the day when I was about to come to Kuala Lumpur and meet you. If Patrizia hadn't broken her arm, I really would have come. And you promised to be there to meet my plane! Weren't you somewhere on the way to Australia, to Papua New Guinea?
No Verdeluna, I was on Java with Yanez, looking for land to buy for his coffee plantation project. I could have met your plane quite easily. And in fact I did go. I rented a small plane to take me from Java to Kuala Lumpur, and I was at the airport gate, waiting for you to come out, to see the beauty of your eyes, the smile on your face. And it was only when I got back to my ship the next day that I found your message...
Oh Sandokan, I'm so, so, so sorry... No don't be, my love.
Now everything is falling into place, and everything will be wonderful.
So how about the silver ring, that so mysteriously found its way to Verdeluna by the good offices of a crow? Ahhh... remember the circus that was visiting her town then? And how all the animals escaped? And how a monkey made its way into Verdeluna's shop? Well that monkey belonged to Martinez, a former sailor on the Mompracem. Jimmy, the monkey would sit in Sandokan's seat on the bridge of the ship and imitate the captain, to the amusement of all the crew.
Then one day, Martinez decided to join the circus for real, and took Jimmy the monkey along with him.
That very circus arrived in Verdeluna's home town.
Sandokan, who has remained good friends with Martinez, heard how Jimmy had ended up in a clothing shop, staffed by a lovely young girl and an absolutely marvellous woman. Well, it wasn't hard to ask Martinez to check out a few things, nor was it hard to ask him to deliver a little present.
After all he was training an entire squadron of crows...
But Sandokan, Sandokan, Sandokan - that means you have known everything about me since the beginning of the year!
You knew where I lived, where I worked!
But Verdeluna, I never asked for a photograph, or your real name, or anything.
To me our nights chatting together were far more important!
A domani, Sandokan, until tomorrow...

#196 - June 9, 2008 - Commander Sandokan is bound for Italy

Verdeluna is absolutely frantic.
She has been trying to reach Sandokan for two days now, without any result.
Where is he?
Why isn't he answering?
And when - BLING - the pirate/merchant captain finally logs on, Verdeluna is ready to break down in tears. After all, her true love was in the middle of a terrible tempest when they last spoke!
But what a storm!
The waves were like the Himalayas' highest peaks, and the wind was like a whip... And the storm came up so suddenly, it was as if Neptune himself wanted to drive the two lovers apart...
Well allright then, but it had better be true that Sandokan is the captain of the Mompracem, or else...
But Verdeluna, I've always told you that not all chat is idle chat, and I have never lied to you.
When the ship got to Dubai, there was a problem. One of the sailors had gone missing, and even though the rest of the crew split up into search parties to comb the city, he was nowhere to be found. Then finally, Captain Sandokan recognised a lone figure kneeling by a tombstone in the cemetery. It was the missing seaman, visiting the grave of his mother for the first time in years...
And are you really called Sandokan?
Maybe...
Just like your name is Verdeluna?
Maybe...
Maybe those are confessions we should make in our first night of love!
Meanwhile, I have another thing to tell you about: our number!
Are you holding the main wall of the Dutch Windmill? Well I said we were picking up a big load of coffee in Dubai, bound for Italy. Tonight, I had all the bills of lading brought to my cabin to make sure everything was right. Well... Well? Well, Sandokan??? Well the number on the document was... six-eight-four-two!
Ahhh Sandokan, our number!
The more I hear you talk, the more I love you, my tiger of Malaysia.
Actually, it was Yanez' idea to specialise in the coffee trade.
For months he and Sandokan had been trying to get orders for a coffee shipment, until one day, the trip to Dubai and Italy came up, allowing the pirate to unfurl his flag on the Mediterranean.
All'assalto!!!
Sandokan has been thinking a lot about the future lately.
Verdeluna's foster son Roberto gave him an idea. And one thing he'd really like to do is have a house full of children, of children from all over the world.
Not all his own, thank goodness.
No - a centre for the children of the world who need someone to look after them.
A technicolor house!
Ohh Sandokan, what a wonderful idea! Come quickly, and I'll be there, at the port of Civitavecchia, with Aunty Faustina's little bottle, marked June 13, 2008...

#195 - June 6, 2008 - Sandokan, Commander of the Mompracem!

To Sandokan, the pirate vagabond, the vagabond pirate, this is a night like no others.
Verdeluna, my love, are you here with me?
I am Sandokan, your vagabond pirate!
I am the vagabond, and none other than the vagabond...
Tonight, Sandokan is happier than any other night.
Has his gallion been surrounded by a hundred dolphins?
Do merlins jump from the waves to salute his ship and all that sail on her?
Sandokan is happy because his gallion has set sail for the Mediterranean, and there is no sweeter wind than the wind that blows him toward Verdeluna...
You are setting sail WHERE???
It's true, tomorrow I'll be in Dubai, to take on an enormous load of coffee bound for Italy.
In a week's time at most, I'll be in the port of Civitavecchia!!!
What's this Sandokan, what are you telling me?
You're a coffee trader???
Verdeluna, are you holding on tight to the wall of the Dutch Windmill?
The moment has come to tell you who I am, and what I do...
You....aren't......Sandokan.....?????
Of course I'm Sandokan!!!!!
Verdeluna isn't scared at all, of course not.
She's terrified.
Terrified and petrified that all her dreams will fall apart, that Sandokan will not stand up to the cold light of day, that her dreams will explode like stars that explode and become black holes... that... that...
Sandokan, I am ready.
Tell me the truth!
Well, it's like this...
NO NO STOP!!!
Wait!!!
Do you want to know who I truly am, or don't you?
Do you want me to turn around the Mompracem and head back to Malaysia?
THE Mompracem, what's this?
I've already told you too much.
It's my ship, my island.
I am the commander of a large merchant vessel, the Mompracem, and have been for years.
The ship is so close to me, I know nothing else, that it's become my island.
Mompracem.
The Mompracem.
I'm beginning to think you really are a pirate...
Oh yes, Verdeluna.
In this business you have to be.
I wish you were here with me now, on the bridge of my ship.
Everything here is as I described it to you. Yanez mans the bar, and his coffee is among the most exquisite in the world. He was a bartender in Hollywood, and so he knows just about anyone worth knowing in the world. And whenever we drop anchor in some port or other, they come and visit us.
One night in Macao, Yanez was serving at the bar in the casino, and he overheard a conversation between some unsavoury characters. It was time for him to leave in a hurry, and when the goons tried to beat him up at the back exit, Sandokan came to his rescue and took him to his ship.
Sandokan, but how about our secret number?
The Oracle?
Ahhhh the Oracle!
He's our radar operator, and he lives at the highest point of the ship. And because he's got a potted palm with him, it always looks as if he's perched on top of it when you look at him from the bridge. He's got a TV and only watches Desperate Housewives, and won't talk to anybody except to give the odd bit of advice...
But Sandokan, you are heading for Italy, where I am, and there is no word about our number?
About six-eight-four-two?
That's right, but for now I am happy to be heading to Italy on a boat full of coffee from Dubai, and I'll wait and see what happens next...
Ohhh Sandokan, tell me, swear to me, convince me that it's all true...
Verdeluna, excuse me, I have to go quickly.
There's a bad storm brewing and I have to tend to the ship.
But rest assured I can't wait to get to Italy and see you!
Sandokan?
Sandokan!?!?
Where are you???
Sandokan???
Oh no, don't be like Ulysses, don't let the storm carry you away...
